The $5000 Gauge - Jul 18, 2009
We at Race Ready are very fortunate to have Don Hatz Racing Engines directly next door to our business. Don, we believe, is the world's premier VW air-cooled engine builder. Don requires everyone who purchases an engine from him to put a pyrometer (exhaust temperature) gauge in their car. The gauge, of course, does not cost $5000 but a major rebuild does. The VW air-cooled is an amazing motor and has adapted to multiple purposes, ours being a racing powerplant. The carbureated motor does not like sustained hi RPM running and requires occasional cold fuel to be delivered to cool the heads. The pyrometer gauge is the indicator to tell you when to perform such a function. It is as simple as pumping the throttle or backing off a bit getting head temperatures to plunge instantly and dramatically. Adding another gauge to your dash may seem redundant, but the value gained on this one far outweighs a possible disaster.
